Creamy Penne alla Vodka

This Penne alla Vodka recipe is a classic Italian pasta dish that’s creamy, tangy and delicious. The vodka adds a unique flavor to the sauce, and when paired with high-quality penne pasta, it’s a match made in heaven. This recipe is quick and easy to make, perfect for a weeknight dinner.

  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • Pinch of chilli flakes
  • 100g tomato puree
  • 5 tablespoons vodka
  • 100ml double cream
  • 400g Penne pasta
  • 30g Parmesan, grated
  • Fresh basil leaves


  1. In a large pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Then, add the minced garlic and chilli flakes and cook for another 2 minutes.
  2. Add the tomato puree and cook for a further 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  3. Pour in the vodka and let it cook for a couple of minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Then, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the double cream.
  4. Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions. Reserve about 50ml of the pasta water before draining.
  5. Add the pasta water to the pan with the sauce, then add the cooked penne pasta and grated parmesan. Toss everything together until the pasta is evenly coated in the sauce.
  6. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves and an extra sprinkle of grated parmesan.
